This lookout over the north shore dunes of Martha’s Vineyard is light on the land. From its foundation, which takes a much smaller footprint than the building to avoid the embodied carbon costs associated with concrete and excessive construction, to its orientation for passive solar gain and its sliding walls, the building takes stock of its delicate ecosystem, surrounded by nature preserves. The walls and floors are built of biogenic materials. The home perches above the forest for ocean views and outdoor living on upper levels. Its siding and bands of vertical windows aim to simplify and unify the form and composition of Tisbury.
